About Sunroom Games
Every house has a room where the light is best. For many of us it's the sunroom — the place for a cup of tea, the crossword and a quiet game of cards. Sunroom Games is meant to feel like that room: bright, calm and comfortable, with nothing hurrying you along.
We're a small, independent website of classic games — the ones you might once have played at the kitchen table or on an old family computer. Everything here is free. There's nothing to download and no account to make.
Made to be easy to play
Many game sites are crowded with tiny cards, flashing buttons and countdown clocks. We do the opposite. Our cards and letters are large, with strong contrast, and there are three text sizes to choose from at the top of every page. There are no timers, Undo is always there, and your game saves itself, so you can stop whenever you like and pick up where you left off. Every game works on a computer, a tablet or a phone.
Games you can trust
Nothing spoils a quiet game like finding out it could never have been won. So we check our games before you play them:
- In Pyramid, TriPeaks, Golf, Scorpion, Forty Thieves, Canfield, Mahjong and Mahjong Connect, every new game we deal can be won. We check each deal before it reaches you.
- In FreeCell, our new and daily games skip the handful of deals known to be impossible.
- Every Sudoku has exactly one solution, and it can be solved by logic alone — no guessing — using the techniques for its level.
- Every Minesweeper board can be cleared by logic alone, with no guessing: we solve each one before it's used.
- In our word searches, every word appears exactly once, and words never run backwards.
- Every crossword clue was written for this site, and we check that no clue gives away its own answer or another answer in the same puzzle.
- In Hearts, Spades, Euchre, Canasta, Cribbage, Gin Rummy, Rummy 500, Crazy Eights and Dominoes, the computer players see only their own cards (or tiles) and what's already been played, just as you do, and follow exactly the same rules.
- In Backgammon, the dice for every turn are fixed in advance by the game number. Undo can't change a roll, and Carol never knows what's coming next.
- In Chess, every rule is in: castling, en passant, promotion, and the draws by repetition, by the fifty-move rule and when neither side can checkmate. We test our move rules against the standard counts that chess programmers use to check theirs.
- Our hints are honest. In the games where we can tell, the hint says plainly when a game can no longer be won, rather than leading you on.
In Klondike and Spider, where most cards start face down, some deals simply can't be won — that's part of the game. We explain how often in Can every game of solitaire be won?, including the figures from our own tests.
Large print, properly
Our printable word searches really are large print. The letters print at about 19 points, or 23 on the extra-large size, and the word list at 18 points — the minimum the American Printing House for the Blind recommends for large print. Our crosswords print their clues at 18 points too, with squares about half an inch wide. Every sheet comes with an answer key and is free to copy for home, classroom and care-home use.
Guides in plain English
Our tips and guides explain the games in plain English — how to win a few more, where the games came from, and how to make them easier to see on your own screen. We check our facts against reliable sources, and where a number comes from our own tests, we say so.
Just for fun
Every game here is played for fun and nothing else. There's no betting, no prizes and no real money anywhere on the site, and nothing to buy. Scores and records are only for your own satisfaction.
How the site is paid for
Sunroom Games is supported by advertising. We keep ads away from the game boards so they never get in the way of play. We never ask for your personal information, and your games are saved only on your own device. Our privacy policy explains the details.
